Henning Stables began for life long horse enthusiast, Joan Henning, in 2000. Supporting her equine interests is her husband, Jim Henning. Over 50 years ago, Joan started in 4H as a youngster on a Shetland pony, and the first blue ribbon sealed a lifelong love of equines. Joan has never been without her horses and strived to provide the best care and training for them. Over three decades ago, Jim and Joan married and Jim realized that horses were in his future also. He began to train youngsters, starting them and fine tuning older horses in his gentle way that we realize has been a gift, fine tuned with years of experience. Good horsemanship, training, and care does not happen overnight, the Henning's have decades of experience, making each year better than the last. The Henning's developed an interest in raising very rare hypoallergenic American Curly horses, of which only approx. 100+ are gaited and the Henning's own seven of them, a stallion, geldings and mares from champion Curly bloodlines. The Henning's love to trail ride and Joan has successfully competed in dressage schooling shows, securing Champion status. She was named the International Curly Horse Organization Intro Level Dressage 2009 Champion, and also participates in furthering her education and training, training others, holding clinics and classes, and enjoys trail riding. Joan, a master teacher of Biology for over a quarter century, taught equine science to high school students, as well as AP Biology and Honors Biology, and is now newly retired to teach full time at Henning Stables. The Hennings are members of the International Curly Horse Organization, Michigan Dressage Association, and the United States Dressage Federation. Jim, a carpenter and woodworker, has been able to retire and spend more time with the horses he loves, attending symposiums, starting and training horses, fine tuning horses in his own unique, gentle and personal way. The Henning's work as a team, riding in both western and english. Jim also trains horses to drive, owning three of their own that pull a cart, buggy and sleigh. The Henning's also train gaited horses, owning their very own rare foxtrotting American Curlies, known for their hypoallergenicity for those with horse allergies. Henning Stables is situated on a beautiful 120 acre farm, with rolling hills, mature forests, meadows and Henning Pond. The Henning's also own other breeds including Missouri Foxtrotters, Quarter Horses, Standardbred, and a very sweet Miniature Horse. Jim and Joan have two wonderful sons, Matthew and Mark. Both boys had their own horses and are now adults. Matthew is a Law student and Mark is a gardener and advocate for those with special needs and disabilities.
